The Halal Industry Emerges As A New Source Of Economic Growth Even For Non-Muslim Countries

UUM ONLINE: 8 May 2017 - Even though the Malaysian halal industry has gained worldwide recognition with its halal certification acknowledged as being among the best in the international arena, the industry is not without its challenges when it comes to developing it.

In this regard, the Muamalat and Halal Management Department, Islamic Business School (IBS), hosted an Adjunct Professorial Lecture with the Honourable Dato' Seri Jamil Bidin, the CEO of the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), as the honoured guest speaker, at the Seminar Hall of the UUM Islamic Centre, this morning.

In his lecture, entitled 'Challenges and Opportunities in the Halal Industry, Dato Seri Jamil stated that the halal industry was gaining greater attention throughout the world because of its huge market potential and high demand, including from non-Muslims.

He said that the concept of halal was viewed not only in terms of food and sustenance, but also in terms of various other aspects of life such as service, consumer goods, finance, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, and tourism. Thus, the concept of halal has to be fully understood since it does not suffice for goods to be only halal in themselves. Rather, the sources that the goods originate from must be untainted and not harmful. In other words, the sources themselves must be considered halalan toyyiban, i.e. allowed and permissible for consumption.

He added that the halal industry was now a new source of economic growth, not only for Malaysia, but also for non-Muslim countries such as Japan, China, Australia, and several Latin countries.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Noor Azizi Ismail; the Dean of the IBS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asmadi Mohamed Naim, and UUM officials.
